California isn’t serious about climate change if it gives up on clean cars

Share

To the editor: Gov. Jerry Brown and state lawmakers are willing to cut clean-car subsidies for residents out of the budget, but they continue to subsidize corporate fossil fuel technologies through the Self-Generation Incentive Program, which is meant to fund clean energy projects. (“California lawmakers unplug the state’s electric car program,” June 24)

Why is that, do you suppose? Is this another example of putting corporations before people?

Based on these choices, I wonder how serious California is about reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a bad idea to end support for a popular program that’s working to reduce carbon dioxide pollution and an even worse idea to subsidize fossil fuels instead.

Without subsidies, fossil fuels would lose out fairly quickly, since the cost of renewable energy continues to plunge every year. The state should stop propping them up.
