Repair crews scrambled to dry out Angel Stadium on Friday after a pipe burst in the wee hours of the morning caused extensive water damage throughout the ballpark.

The Angel Stadium team store was closed Friday, but spokesman Tim Mead said the team was hopeful the store would reopen Saturday. The Angels’ next home game is Monday, and Mead said cleanup should be complete by then so fans will not be disrupted.

“There should be no inconvenience,” Mead said.

Mead said an upper-level pipe burst at about 2 a.m. and sprayed water for about 15 to 20 minutes before it could be shut off. The water flowed down to all levels of the ballpark and got as deep as 2-1/2 feet in one bathroom, he said.

He said the affected areas included the team store, clubhouse, elevators, offices, and the suites of owner Arte Moreno and General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

Angel Stadium opened in 1966. The only older ballparks in the major leagues: Boston’s Fenway Park, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium.

The Angels and the city of Anaheim have discussed a new stadium lease in which the Angels would pay the estimated $150 million cost to upgrade ballpark infrastructure, of which aging pipes would be one example. In exchange, the Angels would get the right to develop the surrounding parking lots.

Mead said the Angels did not yet know how much the damage would cost to repair.

“It’s significant,” Mead said. “It’s not like it’s $15,000.”
