Andy Samberg will host Primetime Emmy Awards
The Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Fox this year, so the network has assigned its biggest comedy star at the moment, Andy Samberg, to host.
Samberg is the star of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which won two Golden Globes last year, and is a past Emmy winner himself for the music and lyrics to the 2006 “Saturday Night Live” sketch “... in a Box.”
Though Samberg isn’t known as a stand-up, he’s done his share of hosting in years past, including the MTV Movie Awards in 2009 and the Film Independent Spirit Awards in 2013.
The choice of host makes sense for the network, which entered into a multi-year deal to develop new comedy series with Samberg and his comedy troupe, the Lonely Island, last year.
This year’s Primetime Emmys will move back to its traditional Sunday night spot, airing Sept. 20. Last year, when the Emmys aired on NBC, the network put them on Monday night so as not to conflict with NFL football coverage and MTV’s Video Music Awards.
No producers of this year’s telecast have been announced yet. The nominations will be announced July 16.
