No injuries reported as school bus crashes into suburban Philadelphia house

No injuries were reported after a school bus carrying nine children left the road and crashed into a home in an upscale Philadelphia suburb Tuesday morning, punching through a wall like an unexploded torpedo.

The accident happened about 7:45 a.m. in Blue Bell, a community about 20 miles north of Philadelphia. A resident who was in a room on the second floor of the home at the time of the crash was unhurt, according to a statement that Whitpain Township police provided to the Los Angeles Times.

“All nine students and the driver were able to exit the bus through the rear emergency door and all were uninjured,” the statement said.

The 58-year-old driver of the Wissahickon School District bus, however, was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

“The bus driver looked absolutely lethargic; he was completely out of it. He said, ‘I don’t remember, I don’t remember,’” neighborhood resident Craig Kalman told WPVI-TV.

One of the students on the bus, Isabel Llopias, 11, told the television station that the crash seemed unreal as it was happening.

“I saw some adults out there and I said, ‘Help us, please!’ Then I saw the latch on the door,” Isabel said. “I opened it and I got out, and then I was encouraging kids. I was like, ‘C’mon, you’ve got to get out! C’mon, let’s go!’”

Police reported that all the students were taken to their school, St. Helena in Blue Bell, and that their parents were notified.
