Baltimore County's school year opened with an event that shook students, teachers and residents - a shooting in the cafeteria of Perry Hall High School on the first day of classes in August. Student Robert W. Gladden Jr., 15, was later charged in connection with the incident, which left 17-year-old Daniel Borowy critically wounded. Only a few weeks later, a student at Stemmers Run Middle School in Essex allegedly threatened his teacher and classmates with a gun. The incidents sparked local debate over school safety. Superintendent Dallas Dance created a safety and security office, and police distributed metal detecting wands to school resource officers. Borowy's family says he is recovering well and has returned to school.
