Orioles starter Jake Arrieta pitched seven strong innings on Friday night at Nationals Park, giving up just one run on a homer by Ian Desmond. He allowed six hits in all and struck out nine batters, but will have to settle for a no-decision because he was matched pitch for pitch by Nats starter Edwin Jackson.
Jackson pitched eight innings and gave up just a run on five hits. He struck out eight and surrendered his only run on an RBI single by Adam Jones in the top of the first inning. He also settled for a no-decision.
Regardless of the eventual outcome, it was a very positive night for Arrieta, who struggled through his previous two starts, giving up 13 earned runs in 10 innings. He was very sharp and shaved nearly a half-run off his ERA -- now 4.72.
