Brian Roberts

told reporters Friday that he wants to play as many games as possible this spring so he can test himself physically after offseason hip and sports hernia surgery.

Orioles manager

Buck Showalter

said Roberts will have that chance. While most veteran players don’t often make road trips during the

Grapefruit League

season, Roberts will.

“We’ve gone over the whole spring. We’ve sat down multiple times,” Showalter said. “He will have a pair of [road] gray pants in his locker, unlike some of our [other] guys.”

Showalter said Roberts will play often as

spring training

winds down.

“He wants to play as much as I’m willing to play him,” Showalter said. “[We’re] going to emphasize the last seven to 10 days. I’m not going to beat him up — he’s still getting ready for the season. But he will get more at-bats than he normally does in the spring.”

Roberts hasn’t played more than 59 games in a season since 2010 because of various injuries.
