"It's not just a job," said one local employee of Southern Management. "It's a career." Founded in 1965 with six employees, Southern Management is now the largest privately owned residential property management company in the Mid-Atlantic region, with $360 million in revenue and 1,644 employees overseeing more than 24,000 apartment homes as well as office centers, conference centers, and hotels. Despite the rough economy, the company has not laid off any employees and has avoided raising insurance premiums for eight years. Local staff members enjoy volunteering for the company's inordinate number of community outreach efforts, including Spruce Up Our Schools, which gives several Prince George's County schools a face lift each year. "There are so many wonderful and worthy causes that we are involved in," said one employee. "I am very grateful to be a part of it all."
