This is a tough call. I'm not sure I have covered a more analytical, perceptive baseball man. And I know I haven't covered a more no-excuses hard-worker than Surhoff. Still, I'm not sure his skeptical nature and zero tolerance for nonsense -- whether it is from the media or today's player -- will work in today's game. His blunt honesty is refreshing, but he¿s not about to coddle anyone, and sometimes that¿s a necessity in a game with different personalities and different motivations. That said, if a manager needs to care deeply and be a good example for others, Surhoff fits that bill. If he needs to be a cheerleader, Surhoff's not the man.
