Born June 8, 1937, in Boston, Massachusetts. received a bachelor of science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1958, a master of science degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1965, and a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Houston at Clear Lake in 1987. He has logged more than 5,200 hours flying time -- 5,000 hours in jet aircraft. On Feb. 12, 1984, astronaut Bruce McCandless, pictured, ventured further away from the confines and safety of his ship than any previous astronaut had ever been. This space first was made possible by a nitrogen jet propelled backpack, previously known at NASA as the Manned Manuevering Unit or MMU. With the completion of this flight McCandless logged 191 hours in space (including 4 hours of MMU flight time).
