The author of such bons mots as "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard," Mencken (1880-1956) was a reporter, essayist, social critic, editor and fierce believer in his own profundity. Possibly best known these days for his reporting during the famed Monkey Trials of the 1920s, when Darwin's theory of evolution was essentially tried in Tennessee, Mencken spent nearly four decades with The Baltimore Evening Sun. His well-worn Corona typewriter is now in the possession of the Enoch Pratt Free Library.
