He's the benevolent king of the lions, father of the eventually heroic Simba and brother of the wicked, jealous Scar. To convey his imposing qualities in the musical required a mask with impact. "We looked at the mythological symbols of strength in kings, and the sun features heavily in African culture," said Michael Curry, mask and puppet co-designer for the musical. "So we made Mufasa's face symmetrical, with the radiant lines of the sun. It's a message of strength and hope as well. It also became our logo."
