In just her third college game, Ward played a critical role in the Tar Heels' 11-8 upset of then-No. 1 and defending champion Northwestern last Friday. The St. Mary's graduate, who splits time in the cage, played the entire second half, making six saves and allowing just four goals. After inheriting a three-goal lead, Ward did not let the Wildcats closer than two goals even though they outshot North Carolina 12-8 in the half; the Tar Heels never trailed. Ward, an Under Armour All-American last spring, has an 8.67 goals-against average and a .458 save percentage.
