National Cherry Blossom Festival: The National Cherry Blossom Festival blossoms each year to commemorate the gift of some 3,000 cherry trees from Tokyo to the nation's capital in 1912. Washington Monument And don't forget to take photos afront the Washington Monument on the National Mall to honor America's first president, George Washington. The Monument is temporarily closed to tours since the 5.8 magnitude earthquake on Aug. 23, 2011, shook the nation's capital. It's scheduled to reopen on May 12, 2014, according to nps.gov.
