Yellowstone National Park

Distance from Baltimore: About a six-hour flight, with stop, to Jackson, Wyo. (56 miles south of Yellowstone) Why it's cool: Winter is the best time to see the wildlife. Yellowstone is home to the largest concentration of mammals in the contiguous 48 states. The park, more than 130 years old, covers parts of three states - Wyoming, Montana and Idaho - and is roughly the size of Connecticut. More than three million visitors annually come to view Yellowstone's natural wonders, including hot springs and geysers. About 3.4 million people visited Yellowstone in 2011, with the vast majority coming during the summer. On a winter's day, the crowds are gone and visitors can be numbered in the hundreds, nearly all of them in snow coaches, on snowmobiles or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Don't miss: Old Faithful, a seven-thousand-foot geyser that erupts nearly every 90 minutes, giving viewers an impressive show. Information: Go to
