Inside Lacrosse magazine has announced plans for the second annual Powerball Lacrosse Tournament for men's and women's adult club players, with major changes that will benefit a charity and open up competition for college players.
The tournament will be held July 12-14 in Atlantic City, N.J., with game action taking place nearby at Richard Stockton College in Galloway, N.J.
“From the get-go, Powerball created a buzz with its unprecedented $25,000 cash prize for the winner,” said IL’s Powerball director, Dan Flynn. “What we never anticipated was that the motivation of participating teams would evolve from playing to win the cash for themselves to competing to raise money for charities. It was a remarkable and completely organic change of heart. The manner in which the lacrosse community rallied together to celebrate the game and compete for something much bigger than individual or team success was completely inspiring. We were really blown away by that.”
There are two significant changes for the 2013 tournament. The first is that the elite “Money Division” will now be the “Charity Division”; all teams in the Charity Division will designate a charity to compete for, with a $25,000 prize up for grabs. Second, with the cash prize now going entirely to charity,
