If the trailer for "Luv" is any indication, Baltimore is about to get itself some serious screen time.
In the just-released teaser for the movie starring Common, Baltimore is everywhere -- there are glimpses of any number of city neighborhoods including
and Domino Sugar, the Howard Street bridge and what looks like
Of course, it's unclear if city boosters will be cheering for this one since, subject-matter-wise, it seems cut from the same drug and gun-themed cloth as "The Wire."
The name of the film, which is slated to hit theaters Nov. 9, is short for "Learning Uncle Vincent." An intense-looking drama, it's about one harrowing day in the life of an 11-year-old Baltimore boy named Woody (Michael Rainey Jr.). He's spending it under the wing of his ex-con uncle, Vincent (Common).
The trailer opens with the words, "Baltimore's a beautiful city, man."
The movie is written and directed by first-timer Sheldon Candis who lived in Baltimore until turning 10.
He and the cast -- which includes
and Danny Glover -- filmed it over three weeks earlier this year. They were all over town, from
to the Mondawmin subway stop to Dunbar High School and Dr. Bernard Harris Elementary School.
"Growing up off of Park Heights," Candis told The Sun earlier this year, "I'd seen a lot of these relationships that exist between young kids and uncles or other older guys. A lot of them truly want to be father figures to these kids, but they don't have the actual makeup or ability to be positive father figures, given the reality of their situations."
