Eclectic best bet: Bill Clinton to speak at Meyerhoff

Even with the candidates largely ignoring overwhelmingly blue Maryland, presidential politics will have a serious presence in the state, thanks to former President Bill Clinton's Oct. 16 appearance as part of the seventh Baltimore Speakers Series. Described as a "powerful voice for progress" by series organizers, Clinton is just the first entry in a distinguished lineup. Following the nation's 42nd president in the series will be "The Glass Castle" author Jeannette Walls (Oct. 30) and TV journalist and host Lisa Ling (Nov. 27). After a break for the holidays, the series will return in 2013 with talks by warfare expert P.W. Singer (Jan. 15); co-chair of the national Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform Erskine Bowles (Feb. 14); former Mexican President Vicente Fox (March 19); and Andes plane crash survivor Nando Parrado (April 16). The series is presented by Stevenson University; The Baltimore Sun is one of the event's media sponsors. Lectures start at 8 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St. Ticket packages for the entire series run $265-$395; tickets are not sold to individual lectures.
