Joe Saunders talked Tuesday about how excited he was to pitch in a pennant race -- and to do it for the team he grew up following (he is from Springfield, Virginia).
On Wednesday, things didn't go particularly well for the 31-year-old lefty.
In the first inning against the Chicago White Sox, Saunders allowed four runs on four hits and a walk, putting the Orioles into a 4-0 hole before his new teammates had a chance to bat.
Saunders made it into the sixth in his Orioles debut -- he was acquired Sunday from the Arizona Diamondbacks for Matt Lindstrom and a player to be named -- but was pulled with two runners on base; both scored.
Overall, Saunders was charged with seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four and threw 62 of his 99 pitches for strikes.
