( HO / September 27, 2012 ) Gulf War veteran John Allen Muhammad was charged on October 29, 2002 with using a weapon to commit murder, affecting interstate commerce by extortion and other charges, some of which carry the death penalty, in connection with the sniper spree that killed 10 in and around Washington. Seven of the charges in the criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland carry a possible punishment of the death penalty, a Justice Department official said.
