Joe Vellano, a senior defensive lineman at Maryland, was named Monday to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player.
Sixty-give players were named to the initial watch list nationwide, including 10 from the ACC. The Maxwell Football Club, which also bestows the Maxwell Award to the nation’s top player, announces the semifinalists Oct. 29 and then three finalists Nov. 19. The winner of the award is announced Dec. 6.
Vellano, an All-ACC and second-team All-American selection as a junior, has recorded 157 career tackles, including 7.5 sacks. His 7.8 tackles per game as a junior led all FBS lineman.
Tyrann Mathieu, defensive back for Louisiana State, won the award last year.
