The first black pitcher to win a World Series game, the 28-year-old rookie spun a six-hitter as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees, 4-2, in the 1952 Series opener. Black attended Morgan State, earning Negro College All America honors in football. He also starred for the Baltimore Elite Giants before joining Brooklyn, where he went 15-4 with 15 saves and won National League Rookie of the Year.
