Scene & Heard: Freeman Hrabowski 20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner
( Karen Jackson, for The Baltimore Sun / October 6, 2012 )
Hundreds of admirers piled into the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel for "A Celebration of Leadership + Innovation." The black-tie bash feted Freeman A. Hrabowski III's 20th anniversary as president of University of Maryland, Baltimore County and announced the launch of the Hrabowski Fund for Innovation.
"He was fabulous then. He's fabulous now," Robert Meyerhoff, event honorary co-chair with Rheda Becker, said of the educator, whom Time magazine included in its recent list of 100 most influential people.
More compliments flowed in from the likes of T. Rowe Price chairman Brian Rogers ("Freeman's one of the great leaders of our time"), Exeter Capital chairman Anthony Deering (One of the most valuable, cherished treasures") and Mosaic Group President Marla Oros ("The most dedicated, committed, energetic, driven man on earth").
Hrabowski deflected the glory in his usual modest manner.
"The message is this," he said: "Education transforms lives. It's not about one person. It's about all of us."
