Chykie Brown and Asa Jackson are two young guys fighting for playing time in the Ravens’ talented secondary and they both stood out Tuesday in a practice that featured several interceptions. Brown, a fifth-round pick last year, and Jackson, a fifth-round pick this year, had two picks each and all four would have went back for touchdowns if play continued.
Running back Bobby Rainey, a rookie undrafted free agent has the exact same listed dimensions (5-foot-8, 212 pounds) as Ray Rice, and the former Western Kentucky player did his best impression of the Ravens’ star by breaking several long runs. With Rice easing his way into training camp, third-round pick Bernard Pierce sidelined and Anthony Allen having yet to separate himself from the pack, Rainey has gotten plenty of repetitions and the diminutive back, who finished second in the nation last year with 1,695 rushing yards, has opened some eyes.
CALL IT A COMEBACK:
Undrafted rookie free agent Dorian Graham took a nasty fall early in practice that prompted cornerback Jimmy Smith to put his hands to his helmet like he just witnessed a bad injury. Graham, who played at Syracuse, got up holding his arm, but he returned to the drills almost immediately and later made two long catches, including beating Smith for a touchdown.
NOT CUNDIFF'S BEST DAY:
In the daily kicking update, the challenger, Justin Tucker, got the best of the incumbent, Billy Cundiff, after both kickers got off to good starts. With a nice wind behind him, Tucker converted 4-of-5 opportunities, drilling a 60-yarder and missing only from 55 yards. Cundiff also made one from 60 yards, but he finished the day with two misses in his last three tries and an overall 4-for-7.
GETTING CHIPPY: A day after Tandon Doss and Cary Williams’ verbal back-and-forth, Ravens rookie center Gino Gradkowski got into it with nose tackle Terrence Cody and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe. Ravens safety Bernard Pollard, who has gotten into a scrap or two in his career, got in between Gradkowski and Cody to break it up.
While wide receivers Tommy Streeter and Devin Goda and offensive tackle Ramon Harewood returned to practice, a host of Ravens remained sidelined. That list includes wide receivers David Reed (knee surgery) and Tandon Doss (hamstring), tight end Dennis Pitta (broken hand), offensive linemen Matt Birk (day off), Bryant McKinnie (back) and Jah Reid (calf), linebackers Terrell Suggs (Achilles), Courtney Upshaw (bruised shoulder) and Josh Bynes (undisclosed), defensive end Pernell McPhee (knee surgery) and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (hamstring). New additions to the injury list included rookie running back Bernard Pierce (hamstring) and veteran nose tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu (undisclosed). Wide receiver LaQuan Williams, guard Bobbie Williams and defensive end Arthur Jones were all shaken up in practice but returned.
