Marylanders gain Olympic berths

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Elizabeth Merrifield Filter of Stevensville and NancyHaberland of Annapolis clinched Olympic berths in the Yngling class at thesailing trials for the games yesterday.

"It's incredibly exciting," their skipper, Carol Cronin, of Jamestown,R.I., said. "I didn't start thinking about the Olympics until three years ago,when we started this campaign. I think it's going to be tough, but I thinkbeing part of this U.S. team has really prepared us well."

Tim Wadlow and Peter Spaulding won the 49er class, finishing the eight-daycompetition with 48 points, 11 better than the second-place finishers.

In the Finn class, Kevin Hall of Ventura, Calif., held on to his lead toearn an Olympic spot. Hall was impressive throughout, finishing 27 pointsahead of second-place Geoff Ewenson of Annapolis.
