Freshman defenseman Patrick Lyons of Salesianum School in Wilmington, Del., has orally committed to play lacrosse at North Carolina, according to Inside Lacrosse, becoming the third player to commit to a college before beginning his high school career.
Last month, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Lyons was a member of the Mesa Fresh 2016 team that went 3-0 in the Green Turtle 2016 Invitational at McDonogh in a field that featured eight of the top 2016 programs: Crabs, Duke's, Green Turtles Balt & DC,
Mesa Fresh 2016 outscored its opponents by a 27-8 margin in the event.
Lyons joins attackman Forry Smith of Haverford School in Havertown, Pa., and long-stick midfielder/defenseman Jack Reilly of Conestoga High in Berwyn, Pa., as members of the Class of 2016 who have made oral commitments. Smith committed to Johns Hopkins, and Reilly picked Virginia.
Lyons is also a member of Duke's Lacrosse Club and Triple H Lacrosse. With Duke's he won the team championship at the Lax-O-Lantern seven-on-seven tournament in late October.
