Edsall said Maryland's football program was thinking about Smith and his family and "praying for them."

Other Terps notes:
* You think Maryland quarterback Perry Hills is taking a pounding? He's been sacked 16 times. Only the quarterbacks for California (16), Colorado State (17) and Colorado (18) have been sacked as often. I'll have a story on this for tomorrow's paper.
I asked Hills about having the best statistical day of his young career in the 31-21 loss to West Virginia.
"That doesn't matter to me – just winning," he said. "Right now it doesn't matter if I hand the ball off 80 times and we win, or we throw 100 times and we win. I don't care about the numbers."
* Maryland linebacker Kenneth Tate returned from a knee injury Saturday. Once he got in, Tate didn't want to leave the game. He said football is his "release" and he was delighted to be back.
Edsall had planned to play Tate on perhaps 25 to 30 snaps. As it turned out, he was in for 54 plays and finished with four tackles.
