A mid-November matchup with Atlantic Coast Conference-favorite Florida State at Byrd Stadium highlights Maryland’s 2012 football schedule, which the conference released Monday.

The Seminoles are one of nine bowl teams from last year the Terps will face this season, and represent, on paper, the Terps’ toughest test in league play. A consensus preseason top-10 team, Florida State returns 18 starters from last season’s 9-4 team, including nine starters off a dominant Seminoles defense.

But it’s West Virginia, not Florida State, that stands as perhaps Maryland’s most high-profile opponent this season. The Terps face the Mountaineers in Morgantown on Sept. 22, the latest installment of what has become a decidedly one-sided rivalry in recent years. West Virginia won its sixth straight game over Maryland last September, 37-31, and later routed ACC-champion Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

The Terps open their schedule Sept. 1 at home against Football Championship Subdivision school William & Mary. They play the following week at Temple, whose surprising dominance in a 39-7 win against Maryland last September proved a portent of the 2-10 season to come. On Sept. 22, coach Randy Edsall and the Terps host Connecticut, which Edsall led to its first-ever BCS bowl bid before leaving to become Maryland coach last January.

After a bye week following its showdown at West Virginia, the Terps open ACC play at home Oct. 6 against Wake Forest. Alternating between road and home games, Maryland then faces Virginia, North Carolina State, Boston College, Georgia Tech and Clemson before facing the Seminoles. The Terps close their regular-season schedule Nov. 24 at North Carolina.

The Terps’ 12 opponents went a combined 89-64 last season. The team begins spring practice March 10, and its game times will be announced at a later date.

Without further ado, here’s the 2012 schedule. Home games are in bold.
