Allison Schmitt, who trains out of the North Baltimore Aquatic Center, was narrowly edged in the 400 freestyle today by France's Camille Muffat. Britain's Rebecca Adlington took the bronze.
Muffat's 4:01.45, an Olympic record, beat Schmitt by .32. Adlington's bronze is the first swimming medal of these Olympics for the host country.
The favored Muffat went out fast and hung on as Schmitt stayed close throughout the race.
