Weekend Wrap: Terps recruit Richy Anderson comes up big in rout

The attention paid to Richy Anderson led to big performances by two of the Maryland athlete commitment's teammates.

In Thomas Johnson's 48-14 win over Tuscarora on Friday night, Josh McClain rushed for 146 yards on four carries, while Dallas Bowens scored on a 17-yard run.

Anderson, who told the Frederick News Post that he overheard Tuscarora players discussing schemes to stop "Richy," still did plenty of damage in his team's win.

"They're kind of a shock to a lot of people," said Anderson, who put up his usual night of production despite the extra attention. He finished with 80 rushing yards, 42 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

** Terps wide receiver recruit Deon Long helped Iowa Western Community College to a 65-21 win over DuPage (Ill.).

Meanwhile, Deon Long had another great day with 174 receiving yards and three touchdowns while Iowa State commit Aaron Wimberly combined with Vernard Roberts for 276 rushing yards and two scores.

** UM running back pledge DeAndre' Lane rushed for 123 yards on 18 carries Friday night, getting Catonsville off to a quick start in its win over Woodlawn.

It took DeAndre’ Lane exactly 15 seconds to produce Catonsville High’s first golden moment while wearing the brand new gold Comet jerseys. Lane returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and the Comets (3-0) never looked back in a 35-6 thrashing of visiting Woodlawn (1-2) on Friday night.

Basketball recruiting

** RaShawn Powell, a 2013 point guard from Orlando who received some Maryland interest over the summer, committed to Memphis on Saturday.

Powell chose Memphis over Alabama and Illinois. He said an in-home visit from Pastner last Monday helped convince him to play for the Tigers. Assistant coach Damon Stoudamire also played a major role in landing Powell, just as he did with King and Crawford.
