Opportunities to visit the National Weather Service's facilities have been rare since the Sept. 11 attacks, but a chance will arise in September.
The Sterling, Va., office of the weather service, which covers the Baltimore area, is holding open house events Sept. 22 and 23.
Details are forthcoming, but the events will include weather balloon launches, kid-friendly weather experiments and information sessions on how forecasts are made and how to prepare for severe weather.
A flier for the event advertises it as part of weather service efforts at "building a weather-ready nation."
Before Sept. 11, the weather service held some of its Skywarn classes at the headquarters in Sterling. But that was curtailed because of security concerns.
Keep an eye out for more details on how you can attend.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
