You can buy Don Draper’s books

Share

Books that belonged to Don Draper himself could be yours.

Props from the now-concluded TV series “Mad Men” are up for auction at Screenbid. The auction includes a copy of Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather” that Don (Jon Hamm) was reading in the last season. It’s up for auction with two other books -- “The Andromeda Strain” by Michael Crichton and “Hawaii” by James Michener -- that appeared in the same scene.

For those who like to read into these things, the books triangulate Don’s life. In Hawaii, he experienced true happiness; “The Andromeda Strain,” a scientific thriller about the end of the world, represents the cataclysmic events of the late 1960s and Don’s feelings of alienation; and in “The Godfather,” men are trapped by a system greater than themselves. Or if you’re not inclined to read into these things, they’re three bestsellers from the 1960s.

As of this writing, there have been 19 bids; the trio of well-worn paperbacks is going for $475.

There are several other vintage bookish items up for auction from the series. They include coffee table books from Megan’s L.A. apartment, “Beautiful California” by Sunset Pictorial and “Aubrey Beardsley: Selected Drawings,” selling for $50. Roger Sterling’s bookends -- clear lucite from his hyper-modern office phase -- are listed at $175. A stylish wooden bookshelf from the creative room at the agency is popular: 32 bidders have gotten the price up to $1,600.

And as so often happened in “Mad Men,” anything Don Draper touched turns to gold. A simple spiral notebook that he used as a journal -- yes, there are a few handwritten pages -- is currently selling for $700.

Unfortunately, only this handful of books from “Mad Men” are included in this auction. Among the missing are Thomas Pynchon’s “The Crying of Lot 49,” read on screen by Pete Campbell, Dante’s “Inferno,” “Portnoy’s Complaint” by Philip Roth, and “The Spy Who Came in from The Cold” by John Le Carre, all of which were read by Don.

The “Mad Men” auction listings close on Aug. 7.
