If book sales are any indication, it’s going to be an Obama/Palin administration. This revelation comes courtesy of Amazon.com, which launched its Election 2008 store last week. Among many cool features, the store tracks the sales of books written by the presidential candidates, the vice presidential nominees and the multitude of books focusing on the hot topic du jour.

The Obama/McCain meter, which is updated hourly, solely measures sales of books written by each candidate. Obama’s three titles (including “The Audacity of Hope,” frequently on The Times’ bestsellers list) are battling it out with McCain’s five. At press time Obama’s book sales were beating McCain’s sales, 76% to 24%.

In the VP race, it’s Palin’s “Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down,” beating Joe Biden’s “Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics.” Not much of a race with a single book to each camp, but the Alaska Governator has a couple new books being published before the election, including the photo satire “Terminatrix: The Sarah Palin Chronicles.”

The highlight of Amazon’s campaign Web page is a “red” and “blue” interactive map of the U.S. in which customers can click on their home state to see what their neighbors are reading and what party is “winning” their state. The map is updated daily.

Other fun features include books recommended by Sens. McCain and Obama. One subject they can agree on is Ernest Hemingway’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”

For those still undecided, there is also a list of “purple” titles -- books that present themselves as nonpartisan, such as Bob Woodward’s “The War Within.”

At one point, Amazon even tracked sales of Obama and McCain Halloween masks. Now that’s a scary poll to gauge the outcome of this election.
