Fusion fitness

Can’t decide between Pilates and spinning? L.A.’s new fusion fitness trend wraps different exercises into one class for added benefits and efficiency.

We rounded up five local hybrid classes offering two — or more — workouts in one. Prepare to multitask and sweat.

YAS

YAS, which stands for “yoga and spinning,” claims to be the first studio featuring a class that combines the two. Offered at three L.A.-area locations, the workout starts with 30 minutes of sweat-inducing spin. Then you move to the mat for a 30-minute yoga series built around toning and balance. Both sides of the class, which can burn up to 800 calories, feature straightforward instruction (no Sanskrit here) to make the workout more approachable to athletes of varying levels. First class free. www.go2yas.com

Cyclelates

The Cyclelates keystone workout combines the calorie burn of cycling with the toning movements of Pilates. The Hollywood studio class starts with 35 minutes of strengthening and stretching on a classic reformer, followed by 25 minutes of heart-pumping spin. Need added inspiration? The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show — with all those barely dressed models — is projected overhead. First class: $5. www.cycleates.com

Piloxing

This unlikely hybrid blends the power of boxing with the flexibility of Pilates in a one-hour workout that can burn up to 900 calories. Trainers at the Toluca Lake academy guide you through a high-energy interval routine that packs a unique punch. Strap on a pair of weighted gloves or go bare-fisted for rounds of boxing, standing Pilates and dance that somehow switch seamlessly. First class: $10. www.piloxing.com

GST

GST (Grace Somatomorphic Technique) blends yoga, Pilates and dance with equipment such as slings, bars, straps and springs. Developed by a former dancer to rehabilitate her back, the 60- or 90-minute classes at the Sunset Boulevard studio lengthen and sculpt muscles using oppositional movement rather than just pose-holding. Basically, you belly up to a ballet bar or the other contraptions on the wall and pull your body in different directions, sometimes using moves you haven’t tried since you were a kid. $25 and up per class. www.gstbody.com

Pound

This 45-minute sweat-fest lets you exercise to the beat of your own drum. The workout fuses cardio, Pilates, isometric poses and drummer-based movements to burn 600 calories per class. Plus you get to bang out aggressions using a pair of weighted drumsticks. Find local pound classes at Crunch Gyms in West Hollywood and Burbank, or stream them on your laptop with the “backstage pass.” Prices vary. www.poundfit.com
