Finding the perfect wine is an art form, and Sam Massa, the assistant sales manager at Bin 604 in Harbor East, is well-versed.
Going on his third year at Bin 604, Massa, 30, began interacting with wine as a young boy when he would play in his father's grape vineyard. Now, the Washington Hill resident has designed some of the store's binology classes and teaches Wine 101: The Basics of Wine Tasting once a month. Sam put his glass down for a bit and talked to b about his favorite wine, Woody Allen and his love for local music.
Worst pet peeve? Pop music. I like things with soul and depth.
What's on your iPod? Tragically, my iPod broke not long ago. Now all I have is a living room full of vinyl, ranging from Bob Dylan, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Led Zeppelin and the Velvet Underground to Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Junior Kimbrough, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Last concert/gig you went to? I go out and see local music at Cat's Eye or Bertha's almost every week. But, DelFest in Cumberland was the last real concert I hit up.
Your worst habit? Opening really nice bottles of wine way too late in the evening.
Favorite/least favorite band? All-time favorite is definitely Bob Dylan. But I think Split Lip Rayfield out of Lawrence, Kan., would be my choice for currently out there, totally slaying the tour scene.
Favorite wine? Domaine Charvin "A Cote" Vin d'Pays 2010. A super unique and charming blend of Grenache and Merlot from an outstanding Chateauneuf-du-Pape producer.
Last movie you liked/disliked? I just saw "To Rome With Love". It was a welcome return to the idiosyncratic Woody Allen of days gone by.
TV show you can't get enough of?"The X-Files"
Favorite thing about working with wine all day? Wine is different than most other consumer goods; it's a quality of life thing. You can really make someone's night with a well-selected bottle of wine. If I do my job right, a relationship forms with customers and people come back to see me.
Favorite book you recently read? "When Nietzsche Wept," by Irvin Yalom. It's great fiction by an eminent psychologist about an even more important philosopher.
Last great meal you had? Brunch at Petit Louis in Roland Park. I love the relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and amazing wine list.
Favorite place to get a drink? When I want to get away from it all I go to Henninger's Tavern in Fells. They've got a decent whisky menu and the staff is great.
Favorite quote/saying? "Great wines are grown, not made."
Favorite thing about Baltimore? I can walk almost anywhere I could possibly need to.
