The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut focused national attention on the need for stricter gun control, and lawmakers in Annapolis say they are intent on tightening Maryland’s laws. They should certainly strengthen the state’s ban on assault weapons and further limit the size of ammunition magazines allowed in Maryland, but they should also take the opportunity to pass legislation that bear bears directly on the daily scourge of gun violence in Baltimore. The strongest measure they could take would be to initiate a licensing system for gun buyers.
