BGE wins industry award for power-outage efforts

The multiple-day outages might have enraged some customers, but Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.'s power restoration work after the derecho and Superstorm Sandy last year won it an industry award for "outstanding efforts."

It's the third year in a row that BGE won an "Emergency Recovery Award" from the Edison Electric Institute, the shareholder-owned electric companies' association. The group's president, Thomas R. Kuhn, praised BGE in a statement for how it responded when faced with "a major restoration effort throughout 2012."

BGE also won an award for assisting other utilities after Sandy.

The derecho hit the region hard with little warning, leaving some customers without power for eight days. BGE says it dealt with about 760,000 outages, some from the windstorm and some popping up in the hot, stormy aftermath.

Sandy, which came with advance warning, knocked out power to about 340,000 BGE customers. Ninety percent had the lights back on within 48 hours of the storm's passing, but the effort took almost five days in total.
