There are good reasons to allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses

A lot of people are opposed to allowing illegal immigrants the ability to obtain a driver's license, and I do understand their point of view, but I'd like to point out the benefits of illegal immigrants having a license:

•In case of a car accident, the illegal immigrant will have the ability to present his license to verify his identity and to provide it to both the police, if needed or requested, and those involved in the accident. Would you rather have him give you a fake name?

•He can obtain car insurance, or would you prefer to have him driving without insurance? Who pays for that? You do.

•The state government would have a better idea of were these illegal immigrants are located.

Understand that illegal immigrants are here to stay, and we need to find a better way to deal with them. Saying, "illegal immigrants do not deserve or should not be given a driver's license in Maryland" ("No license for illegals," March 8) is just not realistic nor economically reasonable. Until we find a politician with some common sense in his/her head to deal with illegal immigration, we'll have to deal with the antiquated and inefficient immigration laws we have today.
