The argument of opponents of the agreement never made sense after our European, Russian and Chinese negotiating partners all signed off on to the deal and are now in the process of rolling back their sanctions.
To argue that we should try to force Iran back to the bargaining table to get a better deal is delusional. Our allies have no intention of reopening the negotiations.
The U.S. cannot impose meaningful sanctions on Iran without the participation of its negotiating partners. For us to disavow the agreement would simply permit Iran to immediately resume development of a nuclear weapon.
The only reasonable way forward is to scrupulously monitor Iran's compliance with the agreement and, together with our allies, take strong action if Tehran fails to meet its commitments.
There simply is no other feasible option at this time. The fact that Republicans to a man (and woman) fail to see the obvious is disturbing at a time when lawmakers need to adopt a realistic view of world events.
