It is truly amazing that Archbishop William E. Lori has the audacity to pose as a leader in the so-called fight for religious liberty when, in fact, he really doesn't believe in it at all ("A Catholic priest speaks up in favor of same-sex marriage," Nov. 4).
Archbishop Lori has attempted to use the power of the pulpit to persuade Catholics to vote his way, which is strongly reactionary. I do not share his beliefs or the beliefs of Catholics who think the way he does. It is pretty clear that Catholics have very strong opinions on a series of issues and that there is a deep divide among practicing Catholics. I do not share Archbishop Lori's worldview, and I resent the constant barrage of political activity that makes attendance at Mass difficult. I have never seen so much lobbying by the Archdiocese on really just one issue as I have on Question 6.
Why is this such a hot button issue? We know that large numbers of Catholics engage in premarital sex, commit adultery, practice birth control, but I can't remember hearing anything about any of these issues in any homily in years — yet all of these behaviors are supposedly immoral by Catholic standards. Most people realize that if gay men were to be denied ordination there would be many fewer priests. I resent the fact that money is being used to pay for lobbying, commercials and printed materials on an issue that really doesn't effect the Church.
People need to live their lives according to the dictates of their consciences and bishops like Archbishop Lori have lost their moral authority at least for many of us by displaying and advocating truly unchristian behavior. We need more priests who are not afraid of the hierarchy and who are not in line for promotions or knighthoods or other trappings of yesterday. There are many problems that need to addressed but I have little hope that tea party Catholics have much to offer and, unfortunately, this group appears to be in the ascendancy.
History reminds us that the Inquisition did not last forever and that once the rot and corruption was exposed there was a return to the true values of the Church. I guess we will have to wait.
