is in its new home. The new location opened very quietly on Aug. 3, according to Xenophon Kohilas, who co-owns the restaurant with his brother.
Ikaros didn't have far to move — just one block up Eastern Avenue. But because the Kohilas family operated the original Ikaros in the same location since 1969, the announcement of the move took some
neighbors by surprise.
The new location, on the corner of Eastern and Ponca, doesn't seat many more diners than the original, but with its broader dimensions and higher ceilings, the new Ikaros is letting Kohilas do things he said he never could in the cozy original.
The new Ikaros has a brick oven, a rotisserie spit and a display of live seafood in the dining room. Not all of these were in place when I spoke with Kohilas by phone. But customers seem to be impressed by the new dining atmosphere.
"They're ecstatic," he said. "You should see their faces. They cannot believe what they see."
Kohilas said that along with the old Ikaros favorites like pastitsio, moussaka and spanakopita, the menu will introduce diners to a broader spectrum of Greek cuisine. He'll be using the rotisserie to roast whole lambs as well as the
, which consists of spit-roasted intestines and other bits of offal.
The new Ikaros has something else the old one didn't. "I'm concentrating on the lounge," Kohilas said. "I want customers to experience the Greek way of dining, where you have something small to eat before the big meal."
Although he said back in January that he wanted to use the original location as an Ikaros Express, a Greek version of popular fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle, Kohilas said the new restaurant has demanded too much of his time to have that operation up and running.

"Nitro Circus" will be at the Breakfast Shoppe with other cast members of "Nitro Circus: The Movie 3D."
The Breakfast Shoppe opened in late June 2010 and has earned a loyal following as well as some kind words from Michael "Road Food" Stern.
Owner Kyle Agaze said the Breakfast Shoppe started serving on average about 8,000 eggs a week its first year. By the second year, it was serving 10,000 eggs a week.
