Antique car show The Chesapeake Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America holds its annual event in conjunction with the opening weekend of the Howard County Fair. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the county fairgrounds in West Friendship. All types of collectible vehicles from model year 1987 back are welcome, with the exception of motorcycles. Registration is $15 at the gate and includes admission to the fair. Fifty "favorites" trophies will be awarded by peer judging — 30 top antique vehicles and 20 modified/custom vehicles. Two "Best of Show" trophies will be awarded by the chief judge for the best antique vehicle and best modified/custom vehicle. All vehicles must have a working fire extinguisher. Friday, Aug. 10

Rock concert The Rockersons will perform hit songs from the 1960s, 1970s and especially the 1980s at Laurel's Concert in the Park, Granville Gude Park Stage, 8300 Mulberry St. The free concert is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and to pack a picnic or visit the concession stand.

On the big screen As part of the Columbia Association's Summer Lakefront Film Festival, "John Carter" (rated PG-13) will be shown at 8 p.m. at the Columbia Town Center Lakefront off Little Patuxent Parkway. Admission and parking are free. Information: 410-715-3161 or go to lakefrontfestival.com.

Nature walk The Howard County Conservancy offers a guided walk, "Wonder Walk: Amazing Monarchs and Other Butterflies," with Mike Raupp, a University of Maryland entomology professor. The free event starts at 10 a.m. and will take place rain or shine. The Conservancy is located at 10520 Old Frederick Road in Woodstock. Meteor showers Join Towson University astrophysics professor Alex Storrs, Stardoc's Joel Goodman and other sky watchers in searching for meteors and learning about galaxies, constellations and ways to limit light pollution. Up to 60 meteors, popularly known as "falling stars," are expected per hour as Earth passes through the debris cloud left by the comet Swift Tuttle. The event takes place from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Howard County Conservancy, 10520 Old Frederick Road in Woodstock. Free. In the case of rain, the event will be moved to Sunday, Aug. 12. Summer festival St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Catholic Church celebrates the summer with its annual festival with games, a flea market, children's activities and more from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The highlight is a fried chicken and ham family-style dinner. Dinner tickets are $13; $7 for children 11 and younger. The festival continues Sunday, Aug. 12, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The church is located at 10800 Old Court Road in Woodstock. Fundraiser Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7472 is partnering with Bob Evans to host a fundraiser benefiting the Veterans Relief Fund. The event takes place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Bob Evans, 4900 Beaver Run in Ellicott City.
