Apocalypse when now? Doomsday enthusiasts are still holding out hope

Well, 12:01 a.m. came and went (even in Mayan Time, otherwise known as Central Time) and nothing really happened. Although Annapolis was plunged into darkness and bathed in an eerie blue light, BGE assures us it wasn't apocalypse-related. Pessimists are still holding out hope though, guessing maybe it will happen at the end of long day's work right before your Christmas vacation starts.

Need more conspiracy theories to keep your Mayan Apocalypse hopes alive? Well, "Jersey Shore" has ended its run. Snooki and company will now fade into obscurity, subsisting off of occasional appearances on "Celebrity Ghost Stories" and "Jersey Shore/Shahs of Sunset Challenge XXXIII."

Meanwhile, a number of gossipy sports stories are also trending with the few remaining people actually at work right now. Actress Camilla Belle has dumped poor little Timmy Tebow. And a former Olympic runner Suzy Favor Hamilton says she became a hooker because she was depressed. Typical overachieving Olympian. When I get depressed, I just gain 50 pounds and hide under a mound of blankets. The thought of becoming a high-priced call girl had never occurred to me.

Finally, the NRA is schedule to speak publicly for the first time after the Sandy Hook school shooting. Few expect anything shocking to come out of the press conference, but it will be interesting to see how they will package their message after the public drubbing they have been getting for the past few days.

Trending on: National Twitter, Baltimore Twitter, Google Trends, Google Plus, Reddit
Why: Apparently, Doomsday is upon us. For some time, grim prophesiers have pointed to Dec. 21, 2012, as the date of the apocalypse predicted by the Mayan calendar. Already spread by some Western scholars, the rumors have only increased in number (aided by the Internet) since the last end-of-the-world scare fizzled out on Jan. 1, 2000. [The Baltimore Sun]

Jersey Shore
Trending on: National Twitter
Why: "Jersey Shore" signed off last night, ending six seasons of drunken foolishness, its place in pop culture semi-secure. It is one of the most successful, and most controversial, pieces of programming MTV has ever devised (and that’s saying something, when you’re also the birthplace of "A Shot at Love II" with Tila Tequila, the crappiest piece of junk ever to deploy a Roman numeral).  [Entertainment Weekly]

Camilla Belle
Trending on: Google Trends
Why: Tim Tebow has had better weeks. One day after Jets coach Rex Ryan announced that he was bypassing Tebow and replacing Mark Sanchez with Greg McElroy, US Weekly reported that he had broken up with actress Camilla Belle after two months of dating. A source told US Weekly that the relationship "just didn't work out."[Huffington Post]

Suzy Favor Hamilton
Trending on: Google Trends
Why: Suzy Favor Hamilton was a top American middle-distance runner from the early 1990s to 2000, a three-time Olympian after becoming a nine-time N.C.A.A. champion at Wisconsin. She was so accomplished that the Big Ten Conference named the award given to its female athlete of the year in her honor. [The New York Times]

Merry Christmas (Happy Holidays)
