Brandon Zachary Duncan is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Dianna Lee Fitzwater. Duncan is under a guard's watch at a local hospital for unrelated issues, police said Thursday.
Police responded to a call at 11:44 p.m. Tuesday and found Fitzwater's body. A witness at the house reported that she and Duncan woke around 11:30 p.m. and went to the living room, where they found the victim unresponsive.
The witness attempted to wake Fitzwater, but she did not respond. The state's Chief Medical Examiner's office ruled Wednesday that Fitzwater died from asphyxiation.
Police said Duncan admitted to strangling Fitzwater.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective J. Davis of the Anne Arundel County Homicide Unit at 410-222-3413.
Also on Wednesday, officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to a report of an attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl near Edgemont Street and Hillside Drive in Edgewater.
Police said two males in an older model station wagon attempted to grab the child and force her into the car, where another child was spotted. The girl, who was not hurt, was able to run away from the station wagon.
As police responded with numerous patrol cars and detectives began to investigate, police said word of the incident spread on social media. After hearing the accounts, police said a male walked to the Southern District office and spoke to detectives.
Afterward, the police were able to identify the vehicle and interview the two males inside, along with an unharmed child. Detectives determined that the suspects did not intend to abduct the 11-year-old girl or assault her.
