Baltimore Police have identified the man killed in a shootout with an officer responding to a domestic violence complaint late Thursday night in Canton.

Police said John R. Monroe, 42, was the man who was fatally shot by an officer in the 3400 block of Foster Ave. Officers had visited a home at about 11:45 p.m. for a disturbance between Monroe and two women, one of them his wife, police said Friday. Minutes later, the officers heard gunshots and chased Monroe, trading gunfire.

Monroe did not appear to have any prior handgun or other arrests beyond a 2004 second-degree assault conviction, according to Maryland court records. Attempts to reach relatives were unsuccessful.

The two women — who police said were ages 28 and 22 — were also struck by bullets. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Friday that authorities believed Monroe had shot them before the officers arrived the second time but were "also exploring whether they were shot in relation to the suspect's confrontation with police."

Three officers fired their weapons, Guglielmi said, and have not been identified by police. City officers have shot eight people this year, killing two.

Neighbors said they were terrified as the incident unfolded.

"It was really scary," said Elizabeth Lina, who lives a few doors down from where the shooting occurred. "We don't unusually have that kind of problem here."

She recalled hearing a shot, "a lady hollering," and then many more shots. Fearing stray bullets, she ran into the middle room of the home she's lived in for 50 years.

Norma Hrica, who lives on Highland Avenue, was sipping coffee and doing a crossword puzzle in her kitchen when she heard arguing though her open back door. She said she head a man say, "How could you do that to me?'"

"Not long after that I heard what I thought was fireworks. I looked up the street and saw a guy holding a gun," Hrica said.
