The residents of the Virginia Towers complex, in the 500 block of Virginia Avenue, were evacuated from the building shortly after 11 p.m., when firefighters responded for reports of smoke in several floors of the building and located the fire in the building's compactor, the department said.
Residents were able to return to their apartments about 1:15 a.m., after fire officials had installed air monitoring meters and determined the apartments were safe, the department said.
There were no injuries reported. A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
