Gov. Martin O'Malley has appointed Danette Howard, a former director of research analysis for the Maryland Higher Education Commission, to become the interim secretary for higher education, according to a statement released Tuesday by the governor's office.

Howard, who has spent most of her career in Maryland's colleges and universities as either a student or a researcher, takes over for Elisabeth Sachs.

Howard has written on issues of access and equity in higher education, and was an assistant director of higher education policy at the Education Trust, a Washington nonprofit. She begins the job Wednesday.
