Carey Howell Taylor, manager

Carey Howell Taylor, a retired

Bethlehem Steel Corp.

manager, died Jan. 27 of

pneumonia

at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 84.

The son of the superintendent of secondary education for city public schools and a homemaker, Mr. Taylor was born in Baltimore and raised in Mount Washington.

After graduating from Polytechnic Institute in 1944, he studied engineering at the University of North Carolina and

Penn State University

for two years, before enlisting in the Navy in 1947.

He then completed his education, earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1950 from the

Johns Hopkins University

Mr. Taylor worked briefly for

Inland Steel Co.

, before joining Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Sparrows Point plant in 1951.

During his 33-year career, he held a number of supervisory and managerial positions including superintendent of the plate mill.

The 50-year

Perry Hall

resident retired in 1984.

He was a member for 65 years of the Grachur Club of Baltimore, of which he had been president.

Mr. Taylor was an accomplished woodworker. He also enjoyed vacationing at the

Outer Banks

and

Nags Head

, N.C.

Funeral services were held Jan. 31.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, the former Mary Ann "Missy" Smith; two sons, Steven C. Taylor of Bel Air and Glenn P. Taylor of Hudson, Colo.; and five grandchildren.
