Peter Wyckoff Higgins, a landscape designer and owner of an outdoors construction firm, died Aug. 31 of complications from
Mr. Higgins moved to the Baltimore area in the late 1970s and initially worked in the advertising division of the Maryland News Co.
More than 30 years ago, he founded Hemlock Landscaping, a business based in
"He decided that one day this is what he wanted to do. His love of horticulture and the great outdoors led him to start his own landscape design and maintenance company," said his daughter, Sarah W. Higgins of Reisterstown. "He will be remembered in the gardens and landscapes he created."
She said he favored evergreens and building masonry walls and garden walks lined with cobblestones.
A dog fancier, Mr. Higgins kept German shepherds and often took walks with them.
Mr. Higgins also enjoyed New Orleans jazz.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the 5th Regiment Armory.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include a son, Army Sgt. John P. Higgins of Baltimore; a brother, Chip Higgins of Buck Hill Falls, Pa.; and a sister, Katherine Marvin of Wyalusing, Pa. His wife of 19 years, Loretta Schaefer, died in 1997.
