Historic Burleigh Cottage sells for $1.1 million

Burleigh Cottage, an historic

Howard County

house whose origins go back to the late 1700s, sold in October for $1.1 million.

The house at 10250 Burleigh Cottage Lane in

Ellicott City

started out as a log cabin used as a hunting retreat. Additions were made to the cabin over the years, and the house is now 3,579 square feet.

"The log cabin part of the house is still the original. It's got the original floors, the original fireplaces," said Concetta Corriere with Remax 100, who represented the seller. "It has been lovingly maintained through the years."

It was designated an historic house by the Howard County Bicentennial Commission and the

Maryland Historical Trust

, Corriere said.

Burleigh Cottage has four bedrooms, four full baths and one half-bath, a library, four terra cotta-lined fireplaces and two two-car garages.

Corriere said one of the big selling points is the privacy. The house sits on six protected acres. It is surrounded by 10 acres protected by the Maryland Historical Trust and another 10 acres belonging to the historic Burleigh Manor House that also can't be developed, she said.

The house had been on the market since early March. One problem in finding a buyer was that some house hunters weren't able to envision how to maintain the historic integrity of the house while adding modern amenities, Corriere said.
